The SMPTE Sum-Up 3-23-24

March 24, 2024

Welcome to the SMPTE Sum-Up, the weekly publication that details the recent and current events of your favorite standards development organization. This week at SMPTE:

It was a big week at SMPTE, with many amazing section events that were celebrated by membership. SMPTE DC held a celebration for the 50th anniversary of the WHKS radio station, a broadcast studio with the purpose of educating the students of the Kent County Public School System. The station is one of the most powerful high school run studios in the country, and we’re proud that they’ve been broadcasting for half a century!

SMPTE Toronto’s meeting was about how AI is changing media, featuring an interactive presentation and panel discussion. The panel really encouraged the audience to disagree with them, a brave ask in a room full of engineers who would have likely disagreed with the panelists anyway, regardless of permission. It was a lively evening of debate and education.

New SMPTE Student Chapter SMPTE Barnard, along with SMPTE New York, held an event celebrating the women who have transformed media. Focusing on media technology, this event showcased important events and women who have made innovative strides, all in the context of a panel discussion. We’re honored they hosted such an important event.

SMPTE San Francisco held an event on SMPTE ST 2110 infrastructure. This event showcased the power of ST 2110, especially when it came to video workflows and the potential for a more interoperable world. Hosted by Megapixel’s Jeremy Hochman, who’s also a member of SMPTE RIS, the event was a very educational evening all about one of SMPTE’s biggest accomplishments.

SMPTE Florida held a virtual production showcase hosted by Fabian Albarracin, the man in charge of Real Time Graphics for Telemundo. The event showcased the power of virtual production, including in live broadcasts, and was an amazing introduction to the emerging art. It was a truly incredible event.

Section elections have begun and members have until April 29th to vote! Don’t miss your chance to select your section leadership. SMPTE is your society, and it’s pivotal to choose the leaders that fit your goals for the year. Vote today!

Award nominations are now open for the 2024 Annual Awards Gala! All SMPTE members are able to nominate someone for one of our prestigious awards, which will be given out during the 2024 Media Technology Summit. The deadline to submit a nomination is April 15th, so don’t wait!

Call for Papers for the 2024 Media Technology Summit is open! Original, unpublished manuscripts aligning these goals will undergo multi-peer review when submitted as abstracts. Abstracts should fall within the range of 300 to 400 words and will be accepted from now till May 30. The conference program committee will notify authors of decisions by June 30.

The SMPTE Job Board has been updated! Game Creek Video in Hudson, New Hampshire is seeking an Equipment Repair Coordinator. The American Enterprise Institute is seeking a Summer Intern for Video Production. Apply today!
