The SMPTE Sum-Up 3-2-24

March 3, 2024

Welcome to the SMPTE Sum-Up, the weekly publication that details the recent and current events of your favorite standards development organization. This week at SMPTE:

It was a VERY busy week for SMPTE sections across the world. On February 28, SMPTE held a meeting all about the process of captioning! Bob Barnshaw of Telestream hosted the event, and showcased how the captioning process can be automated depending on the content’s audio. These tech advancements will help make content more accessible and allow people to see stories from all over the world!

Also on the 28th, SMPTE San Francisco held a meeting on virtual production that involved a 106 foot LED Wall, which industry experts recognize as “pretty big.” Members gathered at the largest sound stage in Northern California and discussed the eco-system and infrastructure of Virtual Production with some amazing demonstrations.

On February 29, SMPTE Sacramento held a meeting on the challenges and opportunities of HDR images. The speaker of this meeting was Ronny Van Belle, who flew in all the way from Belgium! Sacramento welcomed Ronny by hosting a small social at the beginning of the event. The lecture that followed was informative and engaging.

The Leap Day was also the day the SMPTE AU/NZ/ Pacific Island section held their Auckland Summer Social! The evening began with a word from SMPTE executive Director David Grindle followed by a presentation from event sponsor AI Media, as they shared insights into sustainability and captioning. The evening wrapped up with a presentation on current and future technology trends lead by host organization, Accedo. Then the party began!

One March 1st, SMPTE UK held a meeting on the requirements needed to be a broadcast engineer. Multiple speakers lead a discussion on the rapidly changing tech in the industry, and what it takes to keep up with those changes.

The SMPTE Job Board has been updated! RadicalMedia in New York City is looking for a Jr. Engineer. Streamland Media is seeking a remote Snr Microsoft Cloud Systems Administrator. Georgia Public Broadcasting is looking for a C-6-24 Radio Operations Manager.

That’s it for this week’s SMPTE Sum-Up. For more information on past and current events, standards projects, and webcasts, visit our website. See you next week when we report on the TC March Meeting, the SMPTE Atlanta Section, and METexpo 2024!
