May Section Meeting 2021

A New Breed of Mirrorless Cameras For Motion Picture and Video Production

Description

In the dozen years since digital SLRs gained a video-capture capability, even smaller mirrorless cameras derived from SLRs have come into their own. Lately a new breed of 4K, 6K, and 8K mirrorless cameras has arrived, optimized to capture UHD, DCI 4K, and beyond. These feature Super 35mm or Full Frame sensors, high sensitivity, high frame rates, high dynamic range, advanced codecs for internal recording, RAW output, peaking, zebras, SMPTE timecode, and in some cases sensor stabilization, A.I.-assisted phase-detection autofocus, and internal RAW recording. Not least, a significant asset remains their minimal size.

SMPTE-NY will host an evening of presentations by representatives from Canon, Blackmagic Design, Panasonic, and Sony, each outlining the unique technologies featured in their latest mirrorless motion picture cameras.

Director of Photography David Leitner will moderate the evening’s discussion. This event will conclude with a Q&A during which audience members can submit questions to the presenters.
