During this SMPTE Technology Webcast, Renard Jenkins, SMPTE President, will introduce the SMPTE AI document. In addition, he will summarize the history of its development. He will also touch on the major highlights of the document during an engaging conversation with the co-leads Fred Walls and Alex Roulex. They will explore the ongoing development work for AI standards currently in progress at SMPTE. They will seek to emphasize the importance of standards development, interoperability and authentication as key components to adoption which need to be 
integrated into the development and deployment process of the technology. The industry needs in-depth analysis and unbiased research in regards to the development of AI’s advancement while keeping time to market expectations, performance constraints, and security concerns in mind.

Renard Jenkins

Renard Jenkins is an experienced content creation and creative technology executive in the Film, Television and Radio industry. Jenkins is a SMPTE Fellow and currently serves as President of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. He sits on the board of the Hollywood Professionals Association, the Advisory Board of Exceptional Minds. He is a member of Siggraph and is a former board member of MovieLabs, the UltraHD Forum and the Content & Entertainment Council as well as the Microsoft and Oracle Advisory Boards. He is a recipient of numerous awards, including two national Emmys, a Peabody, 2 Headliners, a 2020 Broadcasting and Cable Technology Leadership award. Jenkins was also awarded the Innovator of the Year award in 2017 for his cutting-edge work and accomplishments in UHD, HDR, NGA and supply chain technology through the PBS Advanced Format Center and other industry activities.

Fred Walls headshot

Fred Walls

Fellow of AMD , AMD

Frederick Walls is a Fellow at AMD and a system architect working on display and multimedia. He currently serves as the chair of the Joint ETC Task Force on AI & Media as well as the chair of the 10E Essence Technology Committee. He previously served as the co-chair of the 31FS File Formats & Systems Technology Committee and has been leading the development of the DPX extensions for HDR and associated reference materials. Walls is the Marketing Working Group Chair of the HDMI Forum and has made significant technical contributions to the HDMI standard. He was the primary developer and main author of the widely deployed VESA Display Stream Compression (DSC) standard. Before joining AMD in 2022, Walls worked at Broadcom for 23 years on machine learning and video architecture for set-top box ICs. He is listed as an inventor on 30 issued U.S. patents and has authored eight papers. He is a member of the Society for Information Display, and he received Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT.

Alexandre Rouxel   headshot

Alexandre Rouxel

Senior Project Manager , EBU

Alexandre Rouxel is a Senior Project Manager at the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in the Technology and Innovation (T&I) department. Within the EBU community, he coordinates activities and collaborative developments on AI, metadata modelling and serverless cloud computing. Within T&I, he leads the development of AI applications for media content analysis, tagging and enrichment. His projects include the EBU AI-HUB, a transversal cloud-hosted platform for exposing, evaluating and sharing custom AI applications for media. He is involved in international projects, including leading the specification of the metadata model for the European Media Data Space, known as TEMS.  Prior to joining the EBU, Alexandre gained 20 years of experience as an algorithm and systems engineer in telecommunications, turning research results into products and standards.
