The SMPTE Sum-Up 4-27-24

April 28, 2024

Welcome to the SMPTE Sum-Up, the weekly publication that details the recent and current events of your favorite standards development organization. This week at SMPTE:

The first webcast in our Standards in AI series happened on the 24th! Don’t feel left out if you missed it, though, because the video is now available for all to see! Featuring SMPTE President Renard T. Jenkins, Fellow of AMD Fred Walls, and Senior Project Manager for EBU Alexandre Rouxel, the series focuses on what AI is, how it’s effecting the media, and how Standards can help solve the biggest issues that this innovation brings.

The SMPTE UK section held a meeting this week on the future of media infrastructure. The evening consisted of a lively debate chaired by CTO of Appear, Andy Rayner, and was part of the section’s annual trip to BT Tower courtesy of BT Media & Broadcast. Every aspect of media infrastructure was discussed, from sustainability to interoperability. It was truly a remarkable evening.

SMPTE Corporate Member, Studio Central, released some thrilling news this week on their new post-production facility in Syracuse, NY! The state-of-the-art facility includes a dual-purpose re-recording mixing and color grading Atmos theater, an underground foley pit, 2D and 3D animations studios, and so much more! We will be covering the creation and innovation of this studio in a feature article in the Motion Imaging Journal, so keep an eye out!

Many SMPTE Corporate members were honored for their contributions to the industry at the 2024 NAB Show! Xperi Inc. won the NAB Technology Innovation Award for showcasing in-vehicle gaming features for DTS AutoStageTM. Ross Video was awarded an Excellence in Sustainability Award for the Ultrix Hyperconverged Platform. The Platform combines routing, multi-viewer capabilities, and signal processing. Even more of our members won Product of the Year Awards, so don’t miss the full list in the upcoming 2024 NAB Show Wrap-Up!

The application deadline for SMPTE Student Awards is Wed May 1st! Don't miss your chance to win an award that can help pay for school and advance your early career. Apply for the Student Paper Award, Media Technology Grant, or the Louis F. Wolf Jr. Memorial Scholarship today!

Attention all Color Experts: take the RIS-OSVP Color Management Vendor Survey! The goal of the survey is to identify virtual production thresholds in color management.
