The SMPTE Sum-Up 4-6-24

April 7, 2024

Welcome to the SMPTE Sum-Up, the weekly publication that details the recent and current events of your favorite standards development organization. This week at SMPTE:

It was a quieter week for SMPTE, as staff and sections readied themselves for the 2024 NAB Show taking place April 13-17. However, SMPTE Education still held quite the event! The webcast, Using Psychophysics as a Creative Tool, was held this week, and it was a master class on the bridge connection art and science. Lead by Senior Colorist, Rory Gordon, attendees now have a deeper understanding of the connection between stimuli and perception when it comes to media.

The 2024 NAB Show is almost here and SMPTE will be hosting a ton of sessions! Check out educational events from Future of Cinema, Rapid Industry Solutions On-Set Virtual Production (RIS-OSVP) and Open Services Alliance (OSA), and so much more! All of SMPTE’s sessions, speakers, and more can be found here. See you at NAB!

Speaking of NAB, RIS-OSVP is hosting an afterparty at Vu Studios! Professionals and enthusiasts of Virtual Production are invited to eat, drink, and be merry after a long day at NAB! Hosted by Vū, and sponsored by Planar, Megapixel, QST-LED, MOD Tech Labs, The Studio B&H, and Pixotope, the event will feature sponsor testimonies and an address from SMPTE Executive Director David Grindle. The party takes place on April 16 so register now!

Attention all Color Experts: take the RIS-OSVP Color Management Vendor Survey! The goal of the survey is to identify virtual production thresholds in color management. Results will be featured in a series of engineering articles intended to educate the public on color management practices, problems, and solutions. Participate today!

Section elections have begun and members have until April 29th to vote! Don’t miss your chance to select your section leadership. SMPTE is your society, and it’s pivotal to choose the leaders that fit your goals for the year. Vote today!

Award nominations are now open for the 2024 Annual Awards Gala! All SMPTE members are able to nominate someone for one of our prestigious awards, which will be given out during the 2024 Media Technology Summit. The deadline to submit a nomination is April 15th, so don’t wait!

Call for Papers for the 2024 Media Technology Summit is open! Original, unpublished manuscripts aligning these goals will undergo multi-peer review when submitted as abstracts. Abstracts should fall within the range of 300 to 400 words and will be accepted from now till May 30. The conference program committee will notify authors of decisions by June 30.

The SMPTE Job Board has been updated!
