SMPTE Spotlight: Billy Mouzakitis

July 28, 2026

SMPTE prides itself on the community it has built over the course of a century. That community was not built in a vacuum. Our members play a huge role in expanding, maintaining, and supporting the SMPTE community, and many members even go out of their way to make their Section the best it can be. Billy Mouzakitis is a member of the newly formed SMPTE UK North and has supported several events for the Section.

"I live in the North of England and try to attend as many industry events as I can, but most of them tend to be in London," said Mouzakitis, currently a Solutions Architect for Sky. "I was very happy when I found out SMPTE had started running events in the North and attended as many as I could. I wanted to help support the Northern region of the SMPTE UK Section because I think it’s so valuable for people to have the opportunity to build their network and hear about what others are doing in the industry."

Early in his career, Mouzakitis had a passion for music and technology, which led him to study audio systems at the university. His professional career began at Dolby Laboratories and continued with several broadcasters until he joined Sky in 2019, working on major projects such as the launch of Sky’s UHD HDR linear sports services.

On the SMPTE side, Mouzakitis organized a SMPTE meeting at Sky’s office in Leeds and helped organize hands-on student workshops with an outside broadcast (OB) truck for the SMPTE Young Innovators North event in York last year. These events drew in members and tech enthusiasts alike, expanding SMPTE’s network and creating a closer community.

"SMPTE has been a huge influence on me in the last few years in several ways," said Mouzakitis. "I have learned the value of networking with peers in the industry and gained very relevant insights on subjects very close to my day-to-day work by attending some fantastic events. I have stepped out of my comfort zone by getting involved in event organization, which has been hugely rewarding and a big learning experience for me."

Outside of SMPTE, Mouzakitis spends most of his time looking after his three children. He also enjoys playing guitar, and his most recent obsession is learning to bake sourdough bread. Always willing to try new things and find new passions, it’s no wonder that he’s such an asset to the industry. These dynamic and interesting people have a way of finding others just like them, and it’s a privilege that they choose to gather at SMPTE’s table.

"I’d like to continue supporting SMPTE UK in any way I can and continue the momentum we have been building in the North," said Mouzakitis when asked how he wanted to leave a lasting impact. "In the future, when the time is right, I’d love to get more involved in the more technical activities of SMPTE as well. There is an enormous amount of work behind the scenes to make these events possible, and the dedication shown by my SMPTE colleagues in supporting the industry is so inspiring. I’m incredibly proud to be part of it."
