The SMPTE Sum-Up 5-16-2026

June 23, 2026

Welcome to the SMPTE Sum-Up, the weekly publication that details the recent and current events of your favorite standards development organization. Recently at SMPTE:

The SMPTE Media Technology Conference Europe occurred this week, and the success of this huge event cannot be understated. Between exhibitions, SMPTE sessions, and the packed creators hub, leaders from SMPTE UK and the home office spread the word about current SMPTE projects and showcased the benefits of individual and corporate membership.

Two sections held post NAB meetings this week. SMPTE San Francisco’s meeting was about NAB from the perspective of students and SMPTE New England’s meeting was a panel discussion on the event as a whole. Both sessions highlighted important sessions and exhibits at this year’s NAB, an important breakdown for industry members who weren’t able to attend the conference.

SMPTE is pleased to announce the publication of a new Standard, ST 2131:2026-05, Mapping Audio Definition Model (ADM) and other audio metadata RIFF Chunks to MXF. This standard defines a mechanism for mapping Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF) Chunks containing audio metadata to MXF files to augment MXF Soundtracks.

. To access the document:

    • Members: Please log into your SMPTE account. Click your name at the top right, and then select My Account. In the left column, click the Standards Library button. The SMPTE Standards Library displays. Search or browse the library for the documents.
    • Non-members: Please visit the SMPTE Store. Select Standard Document Purchase, and then follow the instructions to purchase these and other documents.

SMPTE is also pleased to announce a newly available Public Committee Draft (PCD), MPTE 2098-2 Immersive Audio — Bitstream Specification for review and commenting, accessible at: SMPTE ST 2098-2 Public Committee Draft. SMPTE ST 2098-2 is a revision of SMPTE ST 2098-2: 2022. It has been revised and migrated to the new HTML format, improving accessibility and usability of the specification.

Check out SMPTE’s latest blog on Substack! This article is on SMPTE ST 2120, aka TLX. Commonly considered the successor to SMPTE Time Code, this standard introduces the extensible time label (TLX), describes its characteristics, and specifies its architecture.

The 2026 Media Technology Summit Call for Papers is here! Those wishing to participate in MTS2026 can submit one of two ways: The regular conference track requires a 300-400 abstract of a scientific paper, as well as an 800-1000 word outline of said paper. The journal track is for those with full, publish-ready manuscripts between 3,000 and 5,000 words. More details and submissions links for the MTS 2026 Call for Papers can be found here.
