President Message

February 25, 2021

Colleagues and friends,

How are you faring in your corner of the world? This winter, I am reminded again of how lucky we are to be a part of a global community. It means we can find other people who know what we are talking about, technologically speaking that is! And it also means we can accomplish great things together.

With little more than a month into my term as your president, I want to be sure you know that:

  • Opportunities abound for our Society in an ever-changing media space. Let us stay positive! You might consider our member directory if you are seeking collaborators or a friend.

  • Working toward Interoperability remains a core purpose of the Society. In fact, I believe it is our professional duty to find and create innovative solutions. Now, more than ever, the public needs professionals like us to simply make media technology work for them, to improve content offers and story-telling on all audience/consumer facing media platforms. This inspires me personally, even on tough days.

  • The move from hardware to software is happening quickly; through the webcasts and courses you put onsessions you deliver at our events, the articles you submit to Motion Imaging Journal, and the standards some of you develop with us, we can all play a role in bringing order to an exciting, yet chaotic time in media technology.

  • The Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will continue their work to remove barriers of entry as they strive to make SMPTE even more inclusive.

  • The Board of Governors now meets more regularly, helping guide the Society in this trying time.

  • Despite the success of SMPTE 2020: “Game On” we continue to reimagine how we will deliver content and offer “meeting space.” Please look for an update about this soon.

  • Lastly, save the date of our Meet the Board Town Hall, scheduled for March 25th

Whenever, please feel free to directly contact me.

Thank you all. Be safe and be well.
