The SMPTE Sum-Up

November 4, 2023

Welcome to the SMPTE Sum-Up, the weekly publication that details the recent and current events of your favorite standards development organization. This week at SMPTE:

The 2023 Media Technology Summit wrapped up on Oct 19th, and our attendees had an amazing time! From the keynote address to the Annual Gala, MTS 2023 was a major success. Make sure to check out the January issue of the Motion Imaging Journal for an in-depth look at the entire event!

On October 18th, the SMPTE UK Section paid a special visit to the BBC Research and Development department! Attendees got a firsthand look at everything the BBC including applications of large language models to tools & workflows, flexible media audience experiences in Digital Products, and reaching new audiences with immersive live experiences. It was a great learning experience for our friends across the pond!

SMPTE was proud to sponsor the 2023 All American High School Film Festival October 20th-22nd in New York City! These talented students got to have amazing networking experiences with some of the industry’s biggest names, all while eating some classic New York slices.

On October 25th, SMPTE New England held a special in-person and zoom master class from cinematographer and gaffer Ben Heald! Heald regaled the audience with advancements in wireless DMX technology, as well as trouble shooting for said technology while on-set. What an educational evening!

Finally, SMPTE Hong Kong celebrated their 29th anniversary with seminar called “We Are Back in the Game!” This annual celebration of the section was on hiatus due to the pandemic, and this was the first year the event was held in-person since 2019! The entire section was overjoyed to be back and had a wonderful time learning and networking.

That’s it for this week’s SMPTE Sum-Up. For more information on past and current events, standards projects, and webcasts, visit our website. See you next week!
